London can be a great city to visit, especially if you’ve never been there before. If you’re in the city for a conference, on business, or for some other event that brings together a large group of individuals, even if it’s a large group of your friends or family members, you may encounter an issue: getting around London with a large group isn’t as easy as if you were by yourself or with a few other people. If you’re in the city and looking at your different transportation options, it’s important to know which is best for you and your group.
This is what a lot of people do on holiday or when visiting another city, especially if they don’t have to travel very far from their hotel to their destination. In large groups, it’s much more affordable than other options. However, it’s not going to be ideal in all situations. If it’s rainy, which it often is in London, walking may not be a good option. There’s also the fact that if you’re in town for a conference of some sort, you may have boxes or bulky items you need to take with you to your destination. Carrying these items can get tiresome, and it’s also an inconvenience.
Then there’s the fact that some things simply will be too far for you to walk to. In that case, you may have to take the public transportation or hire a taxi. Of course, as a large group, you may need multiple taxis and will need a tube or bus pass for everyone in your party. That can add up, especially if all of this is being put on a company account for business. If you’re with your family or group of friends, you may not have factored in this additional expense, either.
Hire a Taxi
So you’ve decided to hire several taxis to reach your destination. That can work well, but remember you’ll have to pay for the trip there and back, and that can get costly if you use taxis more than once. You also have to deal with trying to get two or three taxis at once or close to each other so that your group arrives near the same time. With traffic, it’s possible your taxis will be separated, or one driver may decide to go another way. You can’t guarantee that your group will arrive at the destination all at once, which can cause some issues if you need to be somewhere at a certain time.
Take the Bus
Another solution is to take the bus, which does go to most places in London. However, it doesn’t always take the most direct route, and you may have to switch buses several times. You might also find that you still have to walk a good distance to a bus stop, which can be an issue if it’s raining. If the bus is too crowded, you may also have the issue of not having enough space for your party.
Because buses do stop frequently and don’t always take the most direct route between your location and your destination, you do have to plan ahead and make certain that you have enough time to get to where you’re going. If you’re on a tight schedule, it’s possible the bus will take too long.
Take the Tube
The tube, sometimes called the London Underground, can also be a good way of getting around London, but it has many of the same detriments that taking the bus does. You’re limited to traveling on the system’s schedule rather than your own, and if there are any delays, there’s nothing you can do about it. Some people also don’t feel comfortable taking the tube late at night or walking to and from the stations.
Hire a Car
This is the option many people gravitate towards because it’s much easier than dealing with the other options. You can simply hire a large people carrier vehicle in London and not have to worry about getting multiple taxis or dealing with the bus schedule. Instead, you’ll have total freedom to take your entire group to any location you want in London at any time. Many of these large vehicles can comfortably hold nine people plus some luggage, so you can ride in style to wherever you’re going.
When some people think of carrier vans, they often think of the ugly and uncomfortable vehicles. The carrier vehicles you can hire in London, however, are often far from this image. Instead, they’re top of the line vehicles that include things such as leather upholstery, plenty of leg room, multiple air conditioning vents, and many other luxuries. Best of all, you don’t need any special license for these vehicles.
Having your own vehicle makes it possible to do more than just drive around London, of course. You’ll also be able to take day trips to many of the areas near the city, something you wouldn’t be able to do if you were limited to using taxis or the public transit system.
Unlike taking taxis or paying for public transit passes, you know exactly what your hired car will cost. You can factor it into your budget, and there are no additional charges or extras you have to worry about. It’s also much easier to keep track of your business expenses because you won’t have multiple receipts for taxis and such.
There is one other option for getting around London, but it’s limited to trips to and from the airport. A shuttle service can take you from the airport to your hotel and later pick you up and take you back to the airport, but that’s all these services will do. They are often fairly costly, too, especially if your lodging is located a good distance from the airport. You may find in the end that it’s simply much easier to hire your own car than it is to take any sort of transportation service.
