Street racers often wonder if bigger brakes are better than standard brakes.  This is a valuable question to ask since bigger brakes can be quite a hefty investment.  Braking power, of course, is extremely important for street cars; but for a variety of reasons. As such, big brake kits might not be the wisest investment for everyone (but a really smart investment for some).

WHAT YOU GET FOR THE MONEY

Bigger brake kits come, of course, with larger, vented rotors and typically with either 4 or 6 piston-opposing calipers.  Big brake kit prices can fall between $800 and $1500 USD.  Along with the advertised improved stopping power, bigger brake kits are also said to offer a smoother experience and better stopping consistency.

BENEFITS TO BIGGER BRAKES

Basically, the better the brakes, the faster you can stop. In a bigger brake kit, the calipers are specially designed for this and result in less wear on your pads.

Bigger brake kits are not as limited in size as standard brake kits. This means more aluminum mounting with better heat displacement and better friction for stopping. More importantly, then, this means a more stable brake pedal when stopping.

HEAT DISPLACEMENT

Bigger brakes mean wider pad area which means broader contact surface and more range of stopping control.  They also provide greater heat disbursement and regulation, which improves longevity of the brake pads and the system as a whole.

PISTON VARIANCES

Standard vehicles have stunted pistons in the brake calipers and this actually results in loss within the braking system.  Bigger braking systems use a different piston design, which improves efficiency.
